10 Essential Items to Take on Your Next Camping Trip

Across the United States and right here in Maryland and Virginia, people love to get outdoors for the occasional camping trip! Camping is a great way to spend time with family and friends, and it also allows you to get outside for a break from the modern indoor lifestyle. Of course, when you go camping, there are a few things you need to remember to take with you for the journey. To help you with the packing process, please review the 10 essential camping items we have listed below.

#1 – A Rope

This is a simple thing to include with your gear, and it can come in handy in a number of ways. You may not have a specific purpose in mind for your rope when starting the camping trip, but it is likely that a need will arise at some point along the way. If you are going to bring a rope, it is also a good idea to brush up on a couple of basic knots before you go.

#2 – Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a great food to pack along with you on a camping trip (provided you aren’t allergic to peanuts, of course). Since it has a very long shelf life, you don’t have to worry about it going bad. Also, it brings both fats and protein to your diet, which can come in handy if you aren’t getting much else to eat.

#3 – A Pocket Knife

You may already have a small knife in your pack, but it is worth including this point here anyway. With a pocket knife along for the trip, you will be able to complete many different small tasks with ease.

#4 – A Variety of Clothes

Even if you have checked the weather forecast for your destination, you can’t be exactly sure as to what kind of weather you will find along the way. Bring clothing which is appropriate for many different weather scenarios so you can be covered no matter what comes along.

#5 – Spices

Even when camping, you don’t want to have to eat bland, unappetizing food. By packing a small, portable spice kit, you should be able to breathe some life into each of your meals.

#6 – A Light Source

The right light source for your camping trip is going to depend on where you are going and what you will be doing. A flashlight is always a popular choice, but lanterns and even headlamps can be useful as well.

#7 – First Aid Kit

You never quite know what will happen while you are on a camping trip. Toward that end, keep yourself prepared by including an up-to-date first aid kit with the rest of your gear.

#8 – Tarps

Camping tarps go along with ropes in that you never quite know how you are going to use them – but they are almost always useful. You can use them for shelter if the rain comes on, or you can set them on the ground as a sort of temporary flooring for your site.

#9 – A Map

That’s right – even in this high-tech age, there is still room for an old-fashioned map in your camping equipment. There is a good chance you won’t have a signal on your phone where you are camping, meaning you may have to opt for a map in order to navigate properly.

#10 – Matches

This list would not be complete without one of the basic camping staples that all campers should have somewhere in their pack. With a good container of matches available, you should be able to start a fire when needed, even in tough conditions.
